Zwickel Bier

Zwickel Bier
Bottom fermented, naturally clouded beer with a strong hops flavour
The “Zwickel Bier” can be likened to an unfiltered, naturally cloudy Pilsener. Therefor it follows the trend for fresher, less processed drinks and foods. It remains unfiltered and gets filled straight from the storage tanks. Because of this, alive yeasts, many proteins, tannins and minerals are left in the beer – substances that are sold in many expensive supplements. The beer is of a strong, straw-yellow colour and the natural cloudiness can vary in intensity, depending on the age of the beer, the temperature of storage and even the KEG in question. The bottom-fermenting yeast settles at the bottom of the fermenting tank, when the fermentation is finished, and gets drained. Sometimes small bits of yeast can still end up in KEG, bottle or even your glass – this is a testament to the nature of an unfiltered drink. In old times people drank their beer like that and brewers still enjoy it like that.
The name stems from the small tap on fermentation and storage tanks, used for beer samples. In German brewers call these taps “Zwickel”. But please do not look for them at your next brewery-visit. A special key is needed to open them – for very good reason.
